Ayusa Au Pair Host Families

What are German au pair host families like?

One of the best things of becoming an au pair with Ayusa is knowing that no two au pair experiences will be the same – all experiences are unique and different – just as no two host families are the same either. For one, this is due to the different expectations au pairs and families have of this adventure and for the other, it depends on the schedules and responsibilities an au pair has.

Nevertheless, usually families are very interested in getting to know their au pair well and in sharing their culture with the au pair. Host families often invite their au pairs to join them for family activities at the weekend. As an au pair, you will create a special bond with your host family that will last beyond your stay. The majority of our host families are dual-parent families with two to four children who are between 1 and 10 years of age. While some families live in spacious apartments the majority lives in a house.

Families have different reasons for hosting an au pair

Quite often, both parents work full-time and therefore want to have a reliable person who will take care of their children. Many families also have the desire to expose their children to another culture and language; therefore, they invite an international au pair to live with their family. Because of Ayusa being the only agency in Germany exclusively focused on native English au pairs, families with a special interest or own background with the English language come to us. Some of the host families have lived abroad and know what it is like to leave your home country and explore a new culture and language.

Just like you, host families have to apply in order to participate in the AuPairCare program. Our local representative visits each family in their home and explains our program to them. They also have to submit a written application to Ayusa. Host families can only view your application, after they have been approved to our program. Ayusa makes sure that host families have realistic expectations about what it means to welcome an au pair from abroad to their home.

Where do the host families live?

Ayusa has many AuPairCare host families and currently offers placements in nine exciting German cities and their surroundings. Our host families live in and around: Hamburg, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Munich.

While we try to accommodate any regional preferences you might have, we always encourage our au pairs to be open-minded about the location because the most important factor is that you get along with your host family as best as possible!  During your stay as an AuPairCare au pair you will have plenty of opportunities to travel and explore Germany and the neighboring countries.
