Step by Step towards your Au Pair Adventure
Your path towards an unforgettable au pair experience
Step 1 - Get informed
The first step is to get all the information you need about the AuPairCare program in Germany. We hope that you find everything you like to know on this website. Ayusa also provides you with written documents to ensure that you are well prepared before you start your au pair adventure in Germany. If you have any questions at all and want to talk to one of our staff at the office, feel free to contact us via telephone or e-mail.
Step 2 - Sign up
If you feel that this is the right program for you, fill out our online non-binding pre-application form. It contains some questions about yourself and will also give us a quick overview of your childcare experience and when you would ideally like to get started. Once we have reviewed the form, we get in touch with you to discuss the next steps. If we have a partner agency in your country, we will connect you with them.
Step 3 - Your application
Now it’s time to get started with your personal au pair profile! After we have reviewed the pre-application form, we will send you our comprehensive AuPairCare application form where you can talk in more detail about your childcare experience, your hobbies, your personal background and the reason why you want to become an au pair in Germany. Make sure to give the application some thought as it will give potential host families an impression of who you are and what makes you special. Once completed, you can return your application to us as a scanned document by email along with the payment slip for your once-only 75 € application handling fee (which will only be collected after you have actually matched with a host family!). We are happy to support and guide you throughout the application process thus if you have any questions about any of the documents you need to complete please let us know and we’re happy to help!
Step 4 - Your interview
Once you have submitted your application, we will invite you to an interview. The interview will be conducted by Skype. Our main priority hereby is to get to know you better and answer all of your remaining questions about the program as well as to advise you about the next steps.
Step 5 - Your host family
Now it’s time for the exciting fun part – speak with our German AuPairCare host families! After we have established through your application and the interview that you are a great candidate for our AuPairCare program, we will release your profile to interested host families. If a host family requests to speak with you, we will notify you by email beforehand. We will then also send you the application form of the host family in order for you to prepare yourself better for your upcoming chat with the family. And don’t worry, we will give you lots of advice about how to clarify your questions with interested host families in order to ensure that you receive the best match possible. You will talk with a host family at least two to three times before reaching a decision. Once a match is agreed upon, you and your host family will choose your ideal departure date. Let us know about it so we can help your host family book a flight for you (if you have agreed to stay for 12 months with them).
Step 6 - Visa
After you have matched with a host family, we can really get down to business. Firstly, you will receive the program contract between you and your host family.
Depending on your country of citizenship, there are different visa processes. If you need to apply for an au pair visa once you have arrived in Germany, we will assist your host family in figuring out what documents are needed for the visa application process and whether you need to bring along any proof of German language knowledge (basic level only) or not.
Now is also the time to apply for an International Driving license shortly before your departure, if your host family needs you to drive in Germany.
Step 7 – Goodbye home and Welcome to Germany!
If you have agreed with your host family to stay for 12 months, we will assist them to book a flight for you. Once booked, we will send you your flight ticket and then it's time for you to pack your bags, say your "goodbyes" and get ready to take off!
Welcome to Germany! You will be welcomed warmly by your host family who will pick you up from the airport. Within the next 48 hours of your arrival your local Ayusa coordinator will get in touch with you to see how you are doing and will visit you and your host family at home within the first two weeks. We also ask that one of your host parents stays with you for the first three days to show you around the house, explain the daily routines of the children and help you adjust to your new surroundings.
Step 8 - Au pair, au pair, au pair
Quite soon you will be in touch with other au pairs in your area and participate in our au pair meetings organized by your local Ayusa coordinator. And now it's also time to get involved in your community, make new friends, attend a German language classes, celebrate birthdays, take care of the children and explore Germany and the German way of life! Basically make the best of your stay while you’re here.
Step 9 – A successful end to your au pair stay
The topic of returning home always comes up much too quickly! Your stay as an au pair will fly by, and suddenly you will have to think about your departure. We will support you and your host family with booking your return flight home. If you originally committed to six months and both you and your family want to continue it, then you have the chance to extend your stay for up to another 6 months.
Step 10 - Back in your home country
Welcome home! Give us a call, drop us a line, and let us know how you are doing! We want to know all about your year, everything you experienced, the people you met, the places you saw. If you want to share your experiences with other former or even future au pairs, we will be more than happy to assist you with it.
