Au pair in Germany - Free Time & Travel Opportunities

Make the most of your time as an au pair in Germany

Naturally taking care of children is the focal point of your au pair program in Germany. However: a stay in Germany for 6 to 12 months without free time is impossible! Lots of au pairs often use their free hours during the week in order to go to German language classes, meet up with other young people, catch up with their friends and family back home via Skype or work out at a gym. Once you have arrived in Germany, your local Ayusa coordinator will be in touch with you for an arrival meeting at your host family’s place. During this meeting she will also advise you of other au pairs living and working in your area and you are of course more than welcome to contact them to meet up for a cup of coffee or explore the surroundings together.

Organized Au pair meetings

Your local Ayusa coordinator will organize au pair meetings on a regular basis. These meetings are also a great way to catch up with other local AuPairCare au pairs. Making new friends is so easy! Through au pair meetings, language courses, your host family or through other activities you will have the opportunity to get to know new people. This way many of our au pairs have been able to establish friendships that last way beyond their au pair stay.

German language classes

Everyone has heard of the German words “kindergarten”, “stumm”, Sauerkraut und Bratwurst”, “kaputt”, “Oktoberfest” and “Gesundheit“.  – Now you have the opportunity to learn much more of the German language than just those few words! As an au pair in Germany you have the opportunity to attend a language course to advance your German. In fact, this educational component is established in the German au pair visa rules and regulations.

What is more and compared to other au pair agencies, with Ayusa  you receive a 90€ educational allowance every month (as part of your 350€ monthly au pair salary) in order to partake in as many language courses as you wish during your stay.

And before you know it you will be able to communicate comfortably in German with the locals and phrases like “Vorsprung durch Technik” will no longer be foreign for you.

Free Time to travel in Germany and Europe

One of the added benefits of being an au pair in Germany is that you have almost four weeks in total in vacation time if you commit to a 12 month stay. As you receive 2 days of paid vacation time every month, you can accumulate these, i.e. to a week's vacation or a long weekend to spend with friends.

The train transportation system in Germany and neighboring countries is very convenient, allowing you to independently explore. Many cities offer a great variety of cultural activities and institutions. The possibilities of what you can experience as an AuPairCare au pair are endless! Visit a local arts exhibition, meet some friends at a city festival or see your favorite band in concert!

The short distances between the different regions of Germany and its neighboring countries are surprising to many au pairs from overseas! You can easily take a train or get a cheap flight to Switzerland, Italy, France and many more. Spend a long weekend in Paris and visit the Eifel Tower or go to Amsterdam and take a boat tour of the canals.

You will also be able to experience German holidays and other local traditions with your German family and share some of your customs and holidays with them. Find out more about your host country: Germany.
