English Tutor: Step by Step

Step 1 - Get informed

The first step is to get all the information you need about the English Tutor Program in Germany. We hope that you find everything you like to know on this website. Ayusa also provides you with written documents to ensure that you are well prepared before you start your adventure in Germany. If you have any questions at all and want to talk to one of our staff at the office, feel free to contact us via telephone or e-mail.

Step 2 - Sign up

If you feel that this is the right program for you, download the application form. It contains some questions about yourself and will also give us a quick overview of your teaching or tutoring experiences. Once we have reviewed the form, we get in touch with you to discuss the next steps. If we have a partner agency in your country, we will connect you with them. Make sure to give the application some thought as it will give potential host families an impression of who you are and what makes you special. Once completed, you can return your application to us as a scanned document by email

Step 4 - Your interview

Once you have submitted your application, we will invite you to an interview. The interview will either be conducted by phone or Skype. Our main priority hereby is to get to know you better and answer all of your remaining questions about the program as well as to advise you about the next steps.

Step 5 - Your host family

Now it’s time for the exciting fun part – speak with our German host families! After we have established through your application and the interview that you are a great candidate for our English Tutor program, we will release your profile to interested host families. If a host family requests to speak with you, we will notify you by email beforehand. We will then also send you the application form of the host family in order for you to prepare yourself better for your upcoming chat with the family. And don’t worry, we will give you lots of advice about how to clarify your questions with interested host families in order to ensure that you receive the best match possible.

Step 6 - Preparations for your trip to Germany

You need to sign up for your comprehensive insurance package, either by yourself or we can help you with that. Since the program does not exceed 90 days, you do not need a special visa. Once you have booked your ticket to Germany, we ask you to send us the information to coordinate your arrival with the host family and our local Ayusa coordinator. Now it's time for you to pack your bags, say your "goodbyes" and get ready to take off!

Step 7 - Welcome to Germany

You will be welcomed warmly by your host family who will pick you up from the airport. Within the first few days after your arrival your local Ayusa coordinator will get in touch with you to see how you are doing and will visit you and your host family at home within the first two weeks. We also ask one of your host parents to show you around the house and help you adjust to your new surroundings. Quite soon you will be in touch with other tutors or au pairs in your area and participate in our local meetings organized by your Ayusa coordinator. And now it's also time to get involved in your community, make new friends and explore Germany and the German way of life! Basically make the best of your stay while you’re here.

Step 8 - A successful end of your English tutor stay

The topic of returning home always comes up much too quickly! Your stay as an English tutor will fly by, and suddenly you will have to think about your departure. If your stay with your German host family is three months long, you will - in most cases - have to leave Germany right away due to visa restrictions. If you signed up for one or two months you are welcome to travel around the country or neighboring countries.

Step 9 - Back in your home country

Welcome home! Give us a call, drop us a line, and let us know how you are doing! We want to know all about your stay, everything you experienced, the people you met, the places you saw. If you want to share your experiences with other former or even future English tutors, we will be more than happy to assist you in this.
