Alexander’s au pair experiences in Germany

Alexander from the USA was an au pair in Dessau (Berlin region) in 2011

I first got the idea of becoming an Au pair when looking into exchange programs in Germany. The genuine experience of being an Au pair was more appealing than just living in a different country surrounded by friends and people I already know.

My application process took a while, but I knew the match they found for me was meant to be. Immediately I clicked with the family and saw eye-to-eye in our interviews via phone and in person. This goes to show the agency knows exactly who is fit for which family because no more than a month after meeting, I was on my way to Germany! Living with my new family brought lots of excitement, insight, ambition, and of course, surprise. I will admit it was a bit hard to get used to life being a bit isolated from friends and family, but immediately my host family made sure I felt right at home during my stay. The thing I find best about being an Au pair is that it forced me to completely adapt to a different culture, language, and lifestyle and learn to experience daily life from a different perspective. The responsibility I've learned in living with and taking care of my family is absolutely priceless - I know it is preparing me for the future.
