Finding your Au Pair Host Family

How do the au pair and the host family match?

Once a host family has been accepted to our AuPairCare program they can start searching for one of our  AuPairCare au pairs. At first, the host family will usually be presented with the short profiles of all the au pairs who are available to start at the time the family would like to begin the program or when their current au pair is finishing her stay.  If a family is interested to find out more about you they request to see your full application including your “dear host family” letter, the photo collage as well as the references. If the family would like to get in touch with you, they receive your contact details (phone number, email address, Skype address)

At the same time we contact you, informing you that a potential host family will get in touch with you during the next few days, most likely at first by email to set up a time and date to talk on the phone or via Skype, whereby the majority of host families prefers using Skype to get a better impression of you. We will also send you the full application of the host family along with the “dear au pair” letter and family photos for you to be able to find out more about the family beforehand and prepare yourself better for the call. Furthermore, we prepare you in advance for the phone call by giving you telephone tips as well as a handbook about the program.

The host family interview

Ayusa believes that it is important for you to find the right host family just as it is important for the host family to match with an au pair that fits in best with their way of life. While ideally we aim to let one host family speak to only one au pair at a time before presenting both with the next candidate (if no match is requested), in times of high demand we will introduce up to three au pairs and families with each other at the same time to increase the chances to find the best match possible. Having said that, we encourage both sides to utilize each interview to its full potential; really trying to get to know the other party because sometimes the first au pair and host family to speak with each other might just be the perfect match.

The Skype / phone interview is the chance for you and the host family to learn more about each other! Not only in regard to the respective backgrounds, hobbies, values but also and foremost in regard to your childcare experiences, the way the family would like you to treat their children, your au pair responsibilities during your stay and of course what everyone involved would like to gain from this experience.

As it is a big commitment for each side, it is important that you and the host family gain a positive impression of one another and feel comfortable with each other. You should plan on speaking with the family at least twice, rather than making a decision after the first phone conversation. After your interview with the host family get in touch with our office to give us a short feedback and to see whether the family has also left any for you. When you have spoken with each other a couple of times, you and the family will have a better feeling about whether you might make a good match.

Once you and a host family have decided on each other and communicated your decision to AuPairCare, then it’s official and you have a match!
